RPII
Re-use of public sector information
The RPII has a policy of making available as much information as possible to as wide an audience as possible. In addition, the RPII is obliged by law to allow the re-use of information from our website. You will find the details of that legislation here.
Under European Union Directive 2003/98/EC, public sector bodies are obliged (with certain exclusions) to allow documentary information to be re-used. The Directive was consolidated into Irish law by Statutory Instrument 279 of 2005.
Purpose of the Regulations
The obligation on public sector bodies to make their information available for re-use is driven by the following benefits identified by the European Union
- Public sector information is a valuable resource that could be used by the private sector to develop value added products and services
- The re-use of information helps stimulate economic activity, innovation and competition
- The re-use of information helps accelerate the evolution of our knowledge-based economy and society
- The re-use of information improves the flow of information from the public sector to the private citizen.
