The RPII was invited by the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) to attend, as an observer, a full scale emergency exercise organised by the French nuclear and radiation protection authorities on Thursday 17 June 2010.

The objective of the exercise was to test the full emergency response, at local and national level, to a simulated accident at a nuclear power plant. Important aspects of the decision-making process at local level and the advisory role of the national radiation protection authorities were scrutinised and tested.

The RPII found this exercise very informative and the feedback provided to the French authorities during the debriefing session after the exercise was highly appreciated. Aspects of relevance to Ireland's emergency preparedness were noted and will be used to feed into the National Emergency Plan for Nuclear accidents (NEPNA).
