Article 24 of the Radiological Protection Act, 1991 (Ionising Radiation) Order, 2000 [S.I. No. 125 of 2000] lays down criteria for laboratories offering a radon measurement service to workplaces. No criteria are laid down for laboratories offering a radon measurement service for homes.
The requirements in S.I. No. 125 of 2000 can be summarised as follows: laboratories whose principal place of business is within the State must be accredited by the National Accreditation Board to European Standard EN 45001 (or its equivalent). Laboratories whose principal place of business is in another EU Member State must be approved by the relevant competent authority in that Member State.
At present, the following companies have confirmed that their detectors are sourced from a laboratory that meets the requirements of Article 24 of S.I. 125 and may therefore offer a radon measurement service to workplaces:
These companies also offer a radon service to homes.
