Workplace Licensees

To safeguard workers and members of the public from radiation exposures from radioactive substances and irradiating apparatus, users of such substances or apparatus must hold a licence issued by the RPII and establish an appropriate framework for radiation protection.

The RPII presently regulates over 1700 users of ionising radiation. These include users in:

  • Hospitals
  • Dental practices
  • Veterinary practices
  • Third Level Institutes of Technology and Universities
  • Industrial companies
  • Distributers/suppliers of radioactive sources/irradiating apparatus.

A licence must be obtained prior to the acquisition of any irradiating apparatus or radioactive substance. Any employer or self-employed individual who intends to take possession of such an item must apply for a licence at least one month before acquiring the substance or apparatus.
